Spending state pension money on an R85K Christmas card

Sunday Times Daily reports that design firm, Blue Apple Tree, received a payment of “R84 452. 60 to write a four-paragraph Christmas message from the Daybreak board to its employees, which was distributed electronically.”

Daybreak is owned one hundred per cent by the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), which is tasked with managing the state pension funds and investing them responsibly.

Daybreak is a poultry farm on the border of Mpumalanga and Gauteng employing around 3300 people. The firm has faced a tumultuous time lately with all but one of its executive team fired or suspended, or resigning after lengthy internal battles.
