While you were asleep: We owe it to our youth

Tomorrow is Youth Day. It will be the 45th year that we remember the hundreds of young students lives lost in clashes with apartheid police during the Soweto uprising on June 16. With youth unemployment at a shockingly high 63.3% for 15 to 24-year-olds and 41.3% for 25 to 34-year-olds, it is time to turn remembrance into action to help create a better life for today’s youth.

President Cyril Ramaphosa wrote in his weekly newsletter this week that youth unemployment is the government’s biggest concern and creating more opportunities for and supporting young people to access these opportunities is government’s foremost priority.

So what measures are government planning to make this priority a reality? One is the official launch of SAYouth.mobi, the National Pathway Management Network, to expand opportunities and support available to young people, Ramaphosa wrote.

How it’s going to work remains to be seen, but one thing is sure, as a collective we are indebted to our youth for the start they made for us to live free.
