While you were sleeping: Gauteng is in deep crisis, but there is hope

With 69% of South Africa’s close to 10,000 Covid-19 infections as of yesterday, overflowing hospitals and desperate calls for oxygen, there is no doubt that Gauteng and its 15.6 million inhabitants are in great difficulty.

Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, the founder of Gift of the Givers who had come to South Africa’s aid in many crises, outlines in an Op-Ed published on Daily Maverick the single biggest problem and what is necessary to get South Africa’s economic hub through this Covid-19 tsunami, including a life-saving intervention that the foundation can deploy now.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that South Africa is planning to make vaccines locally using messenger RNA, the breakthrough technology of the global inoculation effort against Covid-19. The manufacturing will be conducted by the state-owned Biovac Institute, according to the WHO.
