Markets Wrap: JSE dips in mixed bag of trading, rand trading at R14.33/$

The JSE All Share index slid 0.45% in a mixed bag of trading, with short-term insurer Santam, logistics group Super Group, and tile retailer Italtile among the top gainers.

US-based Montauk Renewables was the top loser, clawing back losses to end the day down 6.4% at R109.99 following a BNK Invest report that the stock was entering oversold territory.

Retailers Massmart (-3.96%) and Mr Price (-2.07%) reversed their fortunes of the previous session, while Truworths gained another 2.72%.

In currency markets, the better-than-expected trade balance number of R54.6bn for May 2021 did little to move the needle on the rand, which traded mostly sideways. The local unit were last trading at around R14.33 against the US dollar.

Reuters report the rand was set to post its first monthly fall in five, down 4% in June so far to be one of the worst EM performers this month.

Among commodities, palladium soared another 2% to trade at $2,729/oz, with gold slowly heading back the $1,780-level. Brent crude also ended in the green at $75.20 after briefly dipping below $75.
