While you were asleep: The time for change is now, Mr President

The Covid-19 cloud over the health ministry, the recent handling of the violence in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng and celebrities now volunteering to serve in Cyril Ramaphosa’s new Cabinet must be sending a strong message to the President that the time for change is now. For his predecessor, the jailed former president Jacob Zuma, it was never a problem. In his nine-year tenure, he changed his Cabinet 11 times, the most infamous of his irrational moves in 2017 when he reshuffled Pravin Gordhan out of his Finance Minister post and placed the country on a path to ruin.

Ramaphosa is more reasoned, but with so many pressures building a reshuffle is inevitable. Daily Maverick reports perhaps the final impetus for a reshuffle may come from the Special Investigating Unit’s report into Health Minister Zweli Mkhize. The court papers filed by the SIU have revealed exactly how Mkhize and his family allegedly benefited from the Digital Vibes scandal. And what does Mkize do? Blame his messenger.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders calling for a reshuffle have suggested Ramaphosa look beyond the ANC when he replaces his executive.

Who would’ve thought there’d be a time that we’d beg for a Cabinet reshuffle after the Zuma fatigue? Times are certainly changing, hopefully for the better!
