Market Wrap: JSE tracks rebound in Naspers, while rand gives up gains

A rebound in Naspers and Prosus and a strong showing from Vukile Property lifted the JSE into the green, with the All Share index ending 0.28% higher on 68,898.04 points.

The tech counters tracked a comeback in Chinese tech giant Tencent, adding 2.81% and 3.15% respectively, while Vukile jumped 3.5% on optimism for a quick rebound from the damages suffered in the recent unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. The real estate company said last week the estimated cost of repairs to the damaged properties is expected to be less than 2% of the value of its South African retail portfolio.

Textainer, one of the world’s largest lessors of intermodal containers gained 1.91% ahead of its quarterly results tomorrow, while logistics peer KAP gained 3.46%.

Among the losers were retailers Pick n Pay (-3.12%) and Tiger Brands (-1.90%), and medical technology company Motus (-3.88%).

Telkom (+0.84%) outperformed its telco peers MTN (-1.19%) and Vodacom (-2.79%) after announcing the appointment of telecoms veteran and insider Serame Taukobong as group Chief Executive Officer designate with effect from October 1.

On the currency front, the rand touched R14.22 against the dollar in intra-day trade, but the unit lost more than it gained during the afternoon to last trade at R14.39/$. The currency is, however, back at the same levels it traded before the July unrest and is still by far the strongest emerging market currency over the past week, comments TreasuryONE.

Commodities put in a mixed performance, with platinum and copper giving up nearly 1%, palladium gaining 0.5% and gold continuing to trade above $1,800 an ounce. Brent Crude continued its slide, losing 1.5% to last trade just above $71.20 a barrel.
