While you were asleep: Women’s Month – what’s the point?

It’s true. You can’t keep a good woman down. Not this month, not any other month! To highlight the plight of inadequate protection of the law to whistle-blowers in South Africa, prominent women blowing the lid off among others SAA, Trillian and Imperial Group are taking a stand with a symbolic demonstration at the Zondo Commission when President Cyril Ramaphosa returns today and tomorrow to give evidence as president of the country, where he is expected to focus on what his administration has done to curb corruption.

In other parts of the world, Kathy Hochul will rise in a forth night as the first female governor of New York. You may wonder, Kathy who? Well, here’s a glimpse: An advocate for women facing domestic and sexual violence throughout her career, she led the “Enough is Enough” campaign, fighting sexual assault on college campuses that eventually shone the light on and resulted in outgoing three-term mayor Andrew Cuomo quitting over sexual harassment and bullying allegations. Looks like she’s ready to clean up after Cuomo’s fallout.

And in China, women are increasingly working in heavy-labour industries due to a shortage of male labourers, offering them new freedoms.

But why must we always fight for freedom, to be recognised? Why do we have to hold careers and still carry the burdens men don’t have? Why do we need only a month to be dedicated to women? For Daily Maverick’s Judi Nwokedi the answer in creating a society where equality is the privilege of every citizen and not the preserve of the few lies in bringing the conversation around women and inequality into meaningful engagement with men. An insightful read.
