Comcast Renews English Premier League Soccer Rights in the U.S.

(Bloomberg) — Comcast Corp. has secured the U.S. rights to broadcast English Premier League matches starting in 2022, according to people familiar with the negotiations.

The contract is for more than twice the $150 million a year the league received under the previous deal with Comcast, according to one of the people, reaffirming its status as the most valuable soccer circuit in the world.

Comcast, based in Philadelphia, is banking on continued growth in the popularity of the sport. Matches on its NBC stations last season averaged 879,000 viewers, up 2% from the previous year, according to figures released by NBC Sports. The broadcaster said eight matches each averaged more than 1 million viewers during the season.
