Africa’s Biggest Bank Restores Services After 5-Hour Outage

(Bloomberg) — Standard Bank Group Ltd. has restored services to customers in nine countries who experienced difficulties logging into their digital banking accounts after an outage that lasted around five hours.

Africa’s biggest bank said the service disruption was reported at 11:54 a.m. in Johannesburg, primarily impacting Android devices.

Clients in the nine African countries reported an issue with the lender’s mobile banking app, and South African customers experienced outages with internet banking as well, according to Standard Bank. The Johannesburg-based firm has operations in 20 countries across sub-Saharan Africa.

“Efforts to restore these services to their full functionality took longer than expected,” it said.

The bank’s shares were up as much as 1.2% on Thursday, before erasing almost all gains by the close of trading at 5 p.m. in Johannesburg.
