Opinions of the Day: What to watch in 2022 and the enduring legacy of the Arch

If 2020 and 2021 is anything to go by then we’re in for a jam-packed 2022 filled with political sagas, court cases, parliamentary drama, and a glimmer of business optimism.

News24 columnist, Mpumelelo Mkhabela, has rounded up what he considerers to be the ten most important news stories to keep an eye on this year. Mkhabela included electoral reforms, the appointment of the chief justice, the Zondo Commission report into State Capture, the ANC elective conference, the botched impeachment process of public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, the ongoing Jacob Zuma saga, unemployment, Covid-19 mandates, the national prosecuting authority, and the latest headline maker – the burning of parliament.

It’s certainly a list worthy of keeping close track of and each issue will have lasting consequences for us whether we realise it or not. Read the full story here. (For subscribers)

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was laid to rest over the weekend in a ceremony held at St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town with President Cyril Ramaphosa delivering moving remarks in honour of Tutu. Ramaphosa highlighted the sterling work done by Tutu as chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the 1990s. We’ve searched for some of the latest tributes to the Arch and listed them below.
