Opinions of the Day: First takes on the State Capture Report

On Tuesday evening, acting chief justice, judge Raymond Zondo, handed the first part of a three-part report compiled from the findings of the commission looking into State Capture, to President Ramaphosa.

Much of the initial findings from the first part, which deals with SAA and other state-owned enterprises, is common knowledge by this point and will have surely prompted a “we told you so” from ordinary South Africans.

Among some of the findings were the recommendation that former SAA chairperson Dudu Myeni be prosecuted for fraud, former SARS commissioner Tom Moyane committed perjury and that Jacob Zuma and Moyane knowingly colluded to bring down what the report called “world-class” SARS as well as fabricating the ‘rogue unit’ story.

Ramaphosa has promised he will take action within the next six months, and we can only hope the president will act with haste.
