In today’s opinions, we have a debt of gratitude owed to the men and women who worked countlessly during the Jacob Zuma administration to thwart the Gupta family from ramming home some of their heinous acts, writes Business Day.
Had it not been for the likes of Nhlanhla Nene as finance minister and former treasury department director-general Lungisa Fuzile working tirelessly to block deals brought to the treasury by the captured boards of Eskom, SAA and Denel we would surely be a bankrupted country for years to come.
The newspaper bases its editorial on the release of the fourth part of the State Capture report as compiled by the findings from the State Capture Commission of Inquiry led by chief justice Raymond Zondo.
The latest instalment details the corruption and capture of Eskom and points a finger squarely at former president Zuma and his close ally and friend Tony Gupta. The report found that R14.7 billion worth of Gupta-linked contracts were corruptly awarded but the true cost of state capture at institutions like Eskom and Transnet is unimaginable.
And while Zuma and his ilk must be appropriately dealt with and face the harshest punishment possible for their involvement in state capture, it begs the question: are the ANC prepared to act against Zuma given so many of his supporters and allies still occupy top positions within the party?
It’s a question posed by Ralph Mathekga who writes the ANC needs to deal with those who have been implicated in the Zondo Report, haul them in front of a disciplinary committee and dismiss them from the organisation.
