Opinions of the Day: Criminals can still walk around as freemen in SA

Let’s start with what we know. We know that crime pays in South Africa. We know that those implicated can and will get away with the crime. And we know that even when the perpetrators are brought to justice, the wheels of justice don’t exactly turn as fast as those attached to a Formula One racing car.

How do we know these things? One need only skim-read the four-part State Capture report to make these conclusions.

Yes, crime is rife in SA but what happens when someone is caught red-handed in a sting operation, arrested by police and brought before a judge only for the case to be thrown out of court because the police didn’t handle the case correctly.

Qaanitah Hunter examines a string of cases that have recently been thrown out of court due to police and law enforcement incompetence. Hunter also highlights how the South African criminal justice system is broken and failing.

Meanwhile, much has been written about South Africa’s coalition prospects at a national level given the ANC’s sustained decline in recent elections.

Social Research Foundation director Frans Cronje believes South Africa will morph into a hybrid of the current Israeli Knesset and German Bundestag – where several parties have banded together to form coalition governments where the leader doesn’t always come from the largest party.
