While you were asleep: What’s going on with the Ramaphosa farm robbery?

While the arrest of Atul and Rajesh Gupta in Dubai earlier this week was a welcome reprieve for President Cyril Ramaphosa, offering distraction in the media away from the story that broke last week of a robbery on the president’s farm in Limpopo, he’s not out of the woods yet.

Here’s the latest on the alleged $4 million cash heist at the president’s Phala Phala farm near Bela-Bela, Limpopo.

Business Day reports that the elite crime-fighting unit, the Hawks, will take over the investigation from the presidential protection unit, which is housed within the South African Police service. One of the alleged suspects named in the affidavit provided to police by former spy boss Arthur Fraser was able to buy an apartment worth nearly R1.8 million, a News24 investigation reveals. Erkki Shikongo bought the flat, located in Bloubergstrand, Cape Town, a year after the robbery in Limpopo and paid for the property in cash. Read more here. (for subscribers)
