Opinions of the Day: Sri Lankan protests send a warning to South Africa

In the opinion pages today, protests against the government in Sri Lanka amid a cost-of-living crisis should be a warning sign for the ANC government and trade unions are forcing South Africa to have a debate on a national policy for vaccine mandates.

Cauphus Kgosana turns his attention to the protests in Sri Lanka this week that has seen the masses storm the presidential palace and overthrow the government of the day.

 

Kgosana warns the ANC that the same could happen in South Africa with warning signs flickering all over the place. He points to the poor performance of the government in delivering on basic services and election promises while also shining a light on the constant childish squabbling between cabinet ministers. EDITORIAL: A debate on vaccine mandates is one SA needs to have – Business Day (for subscribers)

 

The publication looks at the recent scrapping of a vaccine mandate at Standard Bank that has seen financial sector trade union Sasbo side with those who were dismissed by the bank for not meeting the vaccination deadline.

 

Business Day writes that trade union Cosatu wants to have a national policy debate on the issue of vaccine mandates and while the labour federation does not oppose vaccine mandates in its entirety, it does not want companies to fire employees who do not want to be vaccinated.

 

The newspaper writes that while it may be late, it’s about time South Africa discussed what a national vaccine mandate would entail. Read more here.
