Opinions of the Day: We’re stuck with load shedding because government ministers don’t know what it feels like

In the opinion pages today, government ministers don’t know what load shedding feels like because taxpayers have funded generators for their private homes. Rob Rose takes a closer look at the idea that a second Eskom should be started to solve the issues of the first one by speaking to the experts.

While the rest of us sit without power and in darkness, sometimes for up to eight hours a day when the dreaded stage 6 is in effect, government ministers don’t know what load shedding feels like.

TimesLIVE Premium points out that while ministers fight among themselves as to who should cop the blame for load shedding, some R1.3 million has been spent on generators for the private homes of ministers and their deputies over the last financial year.

It’s no wonder the rest of us sit with this problem while the government seems paralysed to do anything considering the officials appointed to sort out this mess don’t see the problem in their own homes.

And what’s more, it’s us, the taxpayers, that is footing the bill for government ministers to keep their lights on at home. Read more here.

ROB ROSE: Eskom 2.0 slots into ANC’s pantheon of daft ideas – Financial Mail (for subscribers)

Rob Rose speaks to energy experts and political commentators on the latest ANC idea driven by the energy minister Gwede Mantashe and President Cyril Ramaphosa, who seemingly agrees with Mantashe’s assessment that a second Eskom should be constituted.

Rose writes that the ANC often comes up with plans to fix issues hanging over the country that fail to address the system in place and rather try to create a whole new organisation or policy.

As an example of what Rose calls the ANC’s “daft ideas”, he cites the government’s failure to adequately deal with the ailing healthcare system, instead, it has tried to start something entirely new in the form of the national health insurance (NHI). Read more here.
