(Reuters) – South African state power utility Eskom said it would suspend scheduled power cuts from Saturday as the generation system has recovered sufficiently.
From late June Eskom has implemented regular electricity outages that have prompted public anger and hampered businesses.
“While we are able to suspend loadshedding at this point, Eskom cautions that the power system constraints continue,” Eskom said in a statement, using a term for power cuts.
Eskom’s ageing coal fleet is highly prone to faults, and government plans to add additional capacity to the national grid have been sluggish.
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government has tried to reform Eskom to make it more efficient, but progress has been slow. Last week Ramaphosa promised to announce new ways to solve the power crisis within days.
