The JSE closed in the green on Thursday as investors digested last night’s news from the United States with US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powel signalling the central bank would hike the interest rate by 75 basis points.
The All Share Index added 0.27% to close at 68,611 points.
Powell said there could be a further 75 basis point hike to come this year.
In the currency market, the rand is traded up against the dollar, euro and pound, and is currently trading at R16.59/$.
On the commodity front, it’s a mixed board with gold up over 1% for the day while palladium and silver are also up. Platinum is currently trading weaker at $886 per ounce.
Brent crude is just under 1% weaker today and is currently trading at $107 a barrel.
Back on the JSE, Royal Bafokeng Platinum (0.26%) said it expects earnings to drop by 58% for the six months to end June with interim headline earnings per share expected to decrease to R7.67 compared to R18.31 for the same period last year.
