Opinions Today: Making the case for an MTN-Telkom merge

Duncan McLeod argues in favour of MTN’s proposed acquisition of Telkom as it could have benefits for consumers. McLeod details the specifics of the deal and shows how a merger would put MTN on a level playing field with Vodacom in terms of size in the SA market.

 

McLeod writes that any sort of merger between MTN and Telkom will leave the competition commission with many tough calls to make but it could lead to the opening up of networks for internet service providers and provide the market and consumers with better service. Read more here.

Analyst Stephen Grootes looks at the ANC policy conference kicking off at Nasrec this week where he believes the real debate will be around the controversial ‘step aside’ rule. Grootes writes that previous policy conferences have often been a smokescreen for a different issue or turned into the first salvos of the leadership battle due to take place at the elective conference.
