Kenyan shilling flat as traders await election result

NAIROBI (Reuters) – Kenya’s shilling was unmoved in thin trade on Monday as traders awaited the result of the Aug. 9 presidential election.

An announcement from electoral authorities on the winner appeared imminent in the tight contest between Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

At 0916 GMT, commercial banks quoted the shilling at 119.35/55 per dollar, the same as Friday’s closing rate.

Refinitiv data showed the local currency touched a fresh record low of 119.45/65 to the dollar earlier in the day before erasing its losses. The shilling has lost around 5.3% against the dollar in 2022.
