Morning Brief – Wednesday, 17 August 2022

Good morning. Today we’re covering a new report that details the gender pay gap between female and male executives at large companies, President Ramaphosa will not appear at the public protector’s impeachment hearings, and finance minister Enoch Godongwana’s sexual harassment allegation to be discussed at ANC integrity commission meeting.

 A new report compiled by PwC shows that the percentage of female CEOs at companies listed on the JSE improved to 8% by the end of June 2022, up from just 5% the year before but there is still little to celebrate in the way of female leadership.

While the overall executive population of all JSE-listed companies saw an increase in female representation from 13% to 15% only seven of the JSE Top 100 were led by female chief executives by the end of June 2022.

The PwC report found there was a 32% median pay gap between male and female executives and among those in the upper quartile of companies, the pay gap increases to 49%. Male executive’s average tenure is also longer than females’. Read more here.

Section 194 committee rejects Mkhwebane’s bid to grill Ramaphosa – Daily Maverick 

On Tuesday, Section 194 inquiry chair Qubudile Dyantyi and the committee — on advice from legal services – said parliament would not be calling President Cyril Ramaphosa to testify at the impeachment inquiry of suspended public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

“The committee heard that the oversight process related to the conduct of Mkhwebane, and while Parliament had oversight over the President, the committee was not mandated to conduct this oversight,” reports Daily Maverick. Read more here.

ANC integrity commission expected to discuss assault claim against Godongwana – Business Day

The ANC’s integrity commission is expected to meet today to discuss finance minister Enoch Godongwana’s sexual harassment allegations.

Integrity commission head George Mashamba said Godongwana had not been called to appear before the commission. Still, he did expect that the commission would discuss the matter at its meeting on Wednesday.

Godongwana is a member of the ANC’s highest decision-making body – the national executive committee – and a masseuse has accused him at the Kruger National Park of fondling her during a recent trip Godongwana took with his wife to the park. Read more here.
