Caiphus Kgosana writes that investors have woken up to the sound business that telecommunications firm Telkom has built after the part-state-owned entity found itself being courted by both MTN and data-only operator Rain for a merger.
Kgosana argues that Telkom would be right to team up with a buyer while the company has shown that when government gets out of the way and allows state-owned entities to be run by capable professionals, the business can not only survive but thrive.
He writes that privately the ANC government is worried about its 55% stake in Telkom and does not want to be seen as selling off state assets but Kgosana argues that money could be far better spent on social development programmes. Read more here.
William Ruto: how Kenya’s new president took on powerful political dynasties – The Conversation
Westen Shilaho writes about the Kenyan presidential elections, which vice president William Ruto won this week under a cloud of chaos and allegations of irregularities.
When Ruto was declared the winner his rival’s supporters stormed the podium to declare irregularities and allegations of ballot fixing while earlier four electoral officials broke ranks to declare the results “opaque.”
Still, Ruto’s victory is stunning having beaten out what has been described as a political dynasty in Kenya, a biased media, and plenty of detractors, not least of which is one-time ally President Uhuru Kenyatta. Read more here.
