Adriaan Basson writes about the current acting secretary-general and treasurer-general of the ANC Paul Mashatile and how he rose from a scandal back when he was a Gauteng MEC to becoming the front-runner to be the next deputy president of the ANC.
Basson writes that Mashatile wields enormous power inside the party and is credited with engineering Cyril Ramaphosa’s victory at the last elective conference held in 2017 along with current deputy, David Mabuza, after splitting the Mpumalanga vote between Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
Mashatile also has support from both the anti-Ramaphosa camp and the pro-Ramaphosa camp, meaning the incumbent doesn’t really have a choice in choosing a different running mate. Read more here.
JUSTICE MALALA | The ANC’s legacy will be one of paranoia and back-stabbing – Times LIVE (for subscribers)
Political commentator Justice Malala writes that the ANC is so consumed by the past, apartheid, conspiracy theories and incompetence within the organisation that it cannot even begin to lead South Africa effectively.

What’s more, writes Malala, is that the South African electorate continues to re-elect Conspiracy-R-Us, as the writer dubs the ANC, back into power for another five years of turmoil. Read more here.
