Good morning. Today we’re covering the R3 billion tobacco and gold plunder network uncovered by Sars, Justice minister Ronald Lamola has hit back at EFF leader Julius Malema after he said the EFF would back Paul Mashatile as ANC president, and the government has clearly defined what classifies as boerewors.

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) said it has caught Simon Rudland and his associates managing a transnational plunder network red-handed.

Sars took control of bank accounts, premises and all other assets owned by cigarette manufacturer Gold Leaf Tobacco Corporation and of its directors Rudland and Ebrahim Adamjee.

The plunder involves billions in illicit tobacco and gold cash, money laundering rackets and corruption of five Sasfin bank officials who were enlisted to sneak at least R3 billion to foreign countries and delete the banking transactions. Read more here.

Justice minister Ronald Lamola has hit out at EFF leader Julius Malema’s backing of ANC treasurer-general, Paul Mashatile, to become the next president of the party.

Lamola was responding to Malema, who last week said the red beret-wearing party would be open to entering coalitions with the ANC after the 2024 elections if Mashatile is elected president.

Lamola said when it suited the EFF, they berate Mashatile as a “schemer” and “useless” yet “today Paul Mashatile is the best, and he must lead the ANC.” The justice minister quipped back at Malema and said his deputy, Floyd Shivambu should take over as party leader. Read more here.

Govt has just defined what boerewors is – and is not – in South Africa – Business Insider

Boerewors has to meet a very specific set of standards for it to be labelled and sold as such in South Africa after the government introduced new regulations to the Agricultural Product Standards (APS) Act.

The regulations govern the classification, packing, and marking of certain raw processed meat products. Boerewors must have a minimum total meat content of 90% and a fat content of no more than 30%.

Cereal or starch, vinegar, spices, herbs or salt, food additives, and water are the only other ingredients allowed. Read more here.
