Mini debate on Phala Phala probe expected in Parliament on Tuesday

The Phala Phala farm robbery is set to dominate parliamentary proceedings this week beginning with a debate on Tuesday over whether an ad-hoc committee should be formed to investigate the saga. President Cyril Ramaphosa will also be back in parliament on Thursday to finish answering questions on the matter. Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula delayed the DA’s request for the debate last week, fearing it would duplicate the work of the section 89 panel, which is determining whether there is a prima facie case for impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa. Gwede Mantashe heckled and sent packing at Cosatu national congress

ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe was greeted with jeers of “hamba Gwede” [Go Gwede] and “asinamali” [we have no money] when he took to the stage to address delegates at trade union Cosatu’s 14th national conference on Monday. Delegates believe the ANC is full of empty promises and did not want to be lectured to by another ANC leader. Conference delegates want the ANC to account for a host of issues including the wage increase that the government has offered workers, which the trade union says is not enough given the cost of living crisis.
