Market Wrap | JSE in the green, due to mining index rise

The JSE closed in the green today, the All Share Index moving up 0.19% to 69 439.32 points, mostly due to gains in the mining index.

South Africa’s second-largest commercial landlord by assets, Redefine Properties, published its annual results, which resulted in the share rising by nearly 1 percent.  The company reported a 16% jump in full-year earnings, as it continued its recovery after the lifting of pandemic-related restrictions.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchanged released data that offshore investors bought a net 2.18 billion rand of South African stocks last week.

South Africa’s rand firmed against the dollar and was at 6.30 pm trading at 17.72, mainly due to interest rate hike expectations.

Emerging market stocks hit a one-month high on Monday led by Hong Kong shares, that rallied 2,7%.  However, worries about China’s  economy, due to remaining covid restrictions  limited upside potential, as the country reported its highest number of new infections in six months.

U.S. stocks opened higher on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections. European stocks close higher as investors gear up both for the midterms and inflation data.

Platinum rose heavily on Monday and was at 6.45 pm trading up by 7,43%. Gold, silver and palladium were also trading in the green.
