The ANC and EFF were said to be working together on electing a new mayor for the City of Ekurhuleni after two ANC councillors led a motion of no confidence against DA mayor, Tania Campbell, two weeks ago.
On Tuesday, as the city council sat to elect a new mayor, an extraordinary sequence of events led to Campbell being re-elected as mayor by a majority of councillors. The DA nominated Campbell as its mayoral candidate while the ANC put forward Jongizizwe Dlabathi and the EFF nominated its provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga.
Dunga initially accepted the nomination but then rescinded this, which meant the EFF could either vote with the DA or ANC.
Queenin Masuabi details the extraordinary events that led to Campbell’s re-election with one reason cited as the EFF and ANC disagreeing over the makeup of their potential partnership.
While The Citizen argues in an editorial that the coalitions that govern a majority of South Africa’s metropolitan municipalities need to put aside internal bickering and work to reverse the damage caused by the ANC’s tenure in office.
