Brace for another six to 12 months of rolling blackouts, warns Eskom – Daily Maverick

Rolling blackouts are here to stay for at least the next six to 12 months as Eskom removes around 2,300 MW of generation capacity from the power grid to undergo much-needed maintenance. The repairs and capital investment projects will reduce the already constrained generation capacity forcing the power utility to continue with protracted load shedding. Read more here.

SA abstains from UN General Assembly resolution demanding Russia pay reparations to Ukraine for war damage – Daily Maverick

South Africa continued its foreign policy of fence-sitting when it came to condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine after the latest vote at the United Nations General Assembly. The vote saw South Africa join 73 other nations in abstaining from calling on Russia to pay reparations to Ukraine for the damage inflicted on the country. So far, SA has abstained from every vote addressing the Russian war in Ukraine. Read more here.

Trump announces 2024 run nearly two years after inspiring deadly Capitol riot – The Guardian

Twice impeached former US president Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the 2024 US presidential elections on Tuesday night from the ballroom of his Florida country club, Mar-a-Lago Club. Trump has not been deterred by the recent midterm elections, which saw many of the candidates he endorsed lose their elections. At the same time, a possible political rival for the Republican nomination for president, Ron DeSantis, grew in popularity. Read more here.
