Good morning. After South Africa waited with bated breath on Friday to see whether Cyril Ramaphosa would resign the presidency, he has decided to stay on and fight a Section 89 panel report, which states the president may have violated the Constitution.

ANC National Working Committee decided parliamentary caucus should oppose Section 89 report
After an extensive meeting of the ANC NWC on Sunday, it was decided that the body would recommend to the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC), which meets today, that it should instruct the parliamentary caucus not to vote in favour of adopting the Section 89 report during a vote on Tuesday. Ramaphosa will fight the report in the Constitutional Court
On Sunday, Ramaphosa’s lawyer Peter Harris confirmed the president’s attorneys would file papers to the Constitutional Court after being instructed to take the Section 89 report and recommendations contained therein on review. It is unclear at this stage on what basis Ramaphosa’s legal team will approach the apex court directly but there is precedent after the court heard an application brought by former president Jacob Zuma when he faced a motion of no confidence in parliament. Opposition parties to table a motion of confidence in Ramaphosa
And speaking of a motion of no confidence, opposition parties plan to table one against Ramaphosa ahead of the parliamentary debate and vote on whether the Section 89 report and recommendations should proceed to a full impeachment case against the president. An opposition party forum confirmed on Saturday that it would ask the DA to table a motion of no confidence in the president based on the findings in the Section 89 report. Read more here.
