Good morning. President Cyril Ramaphosa is in full fightback mode and has secured the support of his party if any impeachment vote is to happen in parliament while he will challenge the Section 89 report in court.

ANC NEC says it will instruct the parliamentary party to vote down the Section 89 report

After a heated ANC national executive committee meeting on Monday, treasury general Paul Mashatile says the body resolved that it would support the president and that when the Section 89 report comes up for a vote in parliament, the party would oppose it. Asked what would happen if ANC MPs voted in favour of the adoption of the report, Mashatile said the party would cross that bridge when it gets there. Read more here. (News24, for subscribers)

Vote to adopt Section 89 report and recommendations postponed by a week

Parliament was due to vote on the report on Tuesday, but the vote has been delayed by a week so that MPs can vote during an in-person sitting of the National Assembly. The crucial vote will take place on December 13, which is just days before the ANC will begin its National Elective Conference where Ramaphosa is widely expected to win re-election as party leader. Ramaphosa launches a court bid against the Section 89 report at the ConCourt

On Monday, the president’s legal team filed papers seeking to have the recommendations of the report into theft at his Phala Phala game farm declared unlawful and invalid. Ramaphosa wants the report reviewed and set aside by the Constitutional Court. In his affidavit, the president said the panel misunderstood its mandate to determine if “sufficient evidence exists” with “whether there is a prima facie case against the president.” Read more here. World Cup round-up: Japan’s Qatar adventure comes to an end, Brazil look menacing 

Japan crashed out of the World Cup in Qatar after succumbing to Croatia on penalties. The Japanese lost 3-1 in the shootout after a 1-1 draw following extra time. Japan played some thrilling football in the tournament and defeated Spain and Germany. Brazil overpowered South Korea by four goals to one with the South American team showing they could be the team to beat at the tournament.
