Finland Unveils Grants to Help Households Pay High Power Bills

Finland’s government proposed temporary grants to help households struggling with high power bills.

(Bloomberg) — Finland’s government proposed temporary grants to help households struggling with high power bills.

The subsidy will be 60% of monthly electricity bills in excess of 400 euros ($420), the government in Helsinki said on Tuesday. The maximum subsidy will be 660 euros per month from January through April, and it only applies to bills for one permanent residence, according to a statement.

Europe’s energy crunch has sent power prices soaring across the continent, and in Finland, the worst hit are households with direct electrical heating. Heating consumes almost 70% of energy used in Finnish homes, and one in four households rely on electricity to generate heat, according to the statistics office.
