President Cyril Ramaphosa stated on Thursday that he could not intervene in a statutory process that could result in another electricity price increase for South Africans, EWN reports.
“Eskom does need the money and is in need of funding and therefore there’s a balance that has to be maintained”, said Ramaphosa.
Vincent Magwenya, a spokesman for the Presidency, stated that Cyril Ramaphosa was concerned about the rising cost of living. The decision by the National Energy Regulator to grant Eskom tariff increases of 18.65 and 12.74 percent over the next two years will have a severe impact on South African consumers whose wallets are already strained.
