Japan top court says surgery requirement for gender change unconstitutional -Nikkei

TOKYO (Reuters) – A law requiring transgender people in Japan who wish to legally change their gender to undergo sterilisation surgery is unconstitutional, the country’s Supreme Court said on Wednesday, according to the Nikkei newspaper.

The court’s grand bench, which consists of all 15 justices, said that the current surgery requirement for gender change was unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court previously ruled in 2019 that the requirement was constitutional.
