China explores relaxation, lifting of car purchase restrictions in some regions

BEIJING (Reuters) – China will explore relaxing or lifting car purchase restrictions in some regions, the commerce ministry said on Friday.

The eased restrictions were part of reform measures outlined to streamline auto consumption.

Currently, only a few cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, still impose curbs on car purchases that mostly target gasoline vehicles. The restrictions that vary between the affected localities are intended to ease urban traffic congestion and improve air quality.
