Petronas working with authorities to assess “security risk” at Sarawak LNG facility

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) -Malaysian state energy firm Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) said it is working with authorities after the National Security Council ordered LNG facilities in Sarawak to tighten security following an unspecified threat.

The council said on Monday that it had issued the order for facilities in the town of Bintulu, where Petronas has a major LNG plant,  so that authorities could conduct an investigation into the threat.

In response to the announcement, Petronas said on Monday that it took the matter seriously and was “working closely with the authorities to assess and address the situation”.

“At present, there has been no impact on our operations and no disruptions to our supply,” Petronas said in a statement, adding that the safety of its employees and contractors remained its highest priority.

The Bintulu complex is Petronas’ flagship LNG facility, with an annual production capacity of 29.3 million metric tons.
