Opinions of the Day: When the ANC goes

We’ve been told for many years already that the ANC will lose power at some point in our democratic experiment and the evidence has become more and more compelling over the last three elections – the 2016 and 2021 municipal elections and the 2019 national election.

The ANC performed poorly in all three, the governing party saw its majority further chipped away nationally in the last presidential election while in the last two local government elections, DA-led coalitions or minority governments have been put in place in many key municipalities the ANC once considered strongholds.

When the ANC does lose power nationally, as has been predicted for some time through countless analyses and opinion pieces, we will have to start to think about what kind of South Africa we want, who we want in government, and how we want it all to be run?

News24’s Friday Briefing caries insightful articles from superb commentators debating the idea of what happens when the ANC loses power.

Some of the contributors include Greg Mills and Ray Hartley from the Brenthurst Foundation, analyst Ebrahim Fakir, and columnist and analyst Mpumelelo Mkhabela.

The grouping writes about how political decisions are economic and political leaders need to make better choices, how even if the ANC does lose power, it can still wield influence and have some say in the direction of policy while on the outside, and what the DA needs to do to if it is going to be a viable alternative to the ANC.
