Morning Brief: Zondo to safeguard the release of the final State Capture report

Zondo will apply for a pardon from the courts after missing the deadline for the release of the final report into State Capture, Eskom has implemented another round of load shedding, and a Russian newspaper editor critical of Vladimir Putin has raised over $100 million for Ukrainian children.

The fifth and final report of the State Capture Commission was due to be handed over to President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday but in an about-turn, chief justice Raymond Zondo said he would not be giving the president the last report.

Zondo announced on the sidelines of the judicial service commission interviews of justice Mandisa Maya for the deputy chief justice position on the Constitutional Court.

Zondo said steps would be taken to protect the release of the final report from any legal attacks due to the delay. The report is already late after the high court originally ruled it should be released on June 15. It will now be handed over to the president on Wednesday.

The report includes investigations into alleged intelligence abuses by the Zuma administration, the Estina Dairy Farm scam, and the Gupta family’s Waterkloof base landing. Read more here. (for subscribers)

Eskom implements Stage 2 load-shedding until Thursday – Business Day

Eskom brought back load shedding this week with the power utility implementing stage two power cuts between 17:00 and 22:00 every evening until Thursday night.

The power utility said the latest spate of blackouts is due to an ongoing shortage of generation capacity. Currently, 14 202MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns while a further 5232MW is offline due to planned maintenance. Read more here.

Russian journalist’s Nobel Peace Prize fetches record $103.5 mln at auction to aid Ukraine children – Daily Maverick

The Russian editor-in-chief of the independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov has auctioned off his Nobel Peace Prize gold medal, which he co-won at the 2021 prize-giving, for a massive $103.5 million with the proceeds going towards humanitarian efforts.

The money will be used to benefit children displaced by the war in Ukraine and will be managed by Unicef. Novaya Gazeta is fiercely critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government, but it suspended its operations in March after Russia invaded Ukraine in the previous month. Read more here.
