Morning Brief: Police investigating Enyobeni tragedy, load shedding set to continue through Wednesday

Good morning, here’s what you need to know today:

 

Police have deployed a swath of resources to investigate the tragedy at an East London nightspot where 21 people were found dead on Sunday morning, Eskom says load shedding is here to stay until at least Wednesday, and we could see a huge spike in the petrol price.

Police confirmed that the death toll from the Enyobeni tavern has reached a staggering 21 people, and the victims were all classed as ‘minors’ – aged 17 or younger.

 

The teenagers are said to have made their way to the Enyobeni in East London to take part in post-exam celebrations. Among the dead is the youngest victim who was just 13 years old.

 

Police Minister Bheki Cele and national SAPS commissioner General Fannie Masemola visited the site on Sunday afternoon while “maximum” resources have been deployed to investigate the tragedy. Read more here.

 

Load-shedding to continue at stage 4 until Wednesday, or longer – Business Day

 

Eskom says stage four power cuts will continue until at least Wednesday with persistent worker protests delaying maintenance and repairs. The power utility said in a statement that it would extend load shedding due to “unlawful and unprotected” labour action at several of its power stations.

 

Eskom was forced to ramp up load shedding from stage two to stage four on Friday ahead of the weekend as labour protests linked to wage negotiations disrupted operations. Read more here.

 

South Africa’s petrol price could hit R40 a litre: analysts – BusinessTech

 

As if the load shedding wasn’t bad enough, experts are warning that the fuel price could surge to as much as R40 a litre in the coming months.

 

The continued fallout from the Russian invasion of Ukraine will have devastating effects on the rest of the world, including the surging fuel price.

 

According to Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop, CPI inflation in June is expected to rise above 7% year on year. That increase in inflation is on top of the expected R2.33/litre petrol price hike, food price pressures and some other effects of rising inflation. Read more here.
