Opinions of the Day: Is this the last ANC parliament?

In the opinion pages today, Stephen Grootes analyses how the ANC’s reaction to the Zondo Commission report could affect its survival at the next general election, while Marius Oosthuizen looks to opposition black leaders to takeover once the ANC no longer leads parliament.

Zondo, an extinction-level event for the ANC? Not an impossible prospect – Daily Maverick

With the release of the final parts of the Zondo Commission report, and its damning findings for both multiple players including Jacob Zuma and those that willingly enabled the capture of the state, one key line from the report stands out.

“The natural conclusion is that, during this period, the most dominant political faction — the ANC under President Zuma — permitted, supported, and enabled corruption and State Capture.”

Therein writes Stephen Grootes is the glaring issue for the ANC and its reaction and subsequent actions towards the Zondo report will determine whether or not the ANC will survive the next national election in 2024. Read more here.

As the last ANC Parliament looms, a new generation of political leaders must step forward – Daily Maverick

Similarly, to Grootes’ analysis of the ANC’s survival, Marius Oosthuizen writes that the current parliament, led by the ANC, could be the last ANC parliament and that the one that emerges after it will be filled with pragmatic new leadership ready to transform the economy.

Oosthuizen makes comparisons to Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert’s transition from opposition party leader to grassroots activist where he was able to get the banned ANC to meet with the Afrikaner elite during apartheid.

But this time around, Oosthuizen envisages that there will be vibrant new black leaders emerging from the opposition benches and ready to pick up the governing mantel after the ANC departs. Read more here.
