Opinions of the Day: Our politicians are so useless; we shower praise on those doing their jobs

In the opinion pages today, we should be forgiven for heaping praise on those who actually give good service delivery at our local municipalities, and President Ramaphosa missed an opportunity to apologise to former Prasa chair Popo Molefe when he brought forward allegations of corruption at the railway entity.

When politicians in South Africa simply do their jobs, we are quick to jump at showering them with praise. So starved are we of good and decent service delivery that when someone performs the bare minimum required of their jobs in the government we are simply taken aback by the initiative.

 

Getrude Makhafola writes about two mayors who have been praised recently for the work they have done in turning around their municipalities since taking over the mayoral chain. The DA’s Christopher Pappas, mayor of the uMngeni municipality in KZN and the Patriotic Alliance’s Gayton McKenzie, mayor of the Central Karoo District.

Failing to come clean tarnishes Ramaphosa’s credibility – Business Day (for subscribers)

 

President Cyril Ramaphosa had the perfect opportunity to apologise for not supporting former Prasa chairperson Popo Molefe when he came to the then ANC top six with a string of corrupt activities linked to individuals within Prasa.

 

Ramaphosa at the time chose to do and say nothing writes Jabulani Sikhakhane. He goes on to state that following the release of the final volumes of the Zondo Commission Report, where chief justice Raymond Zondo says it would be no surprise that former president Jacob Zuma would do nothing about the allegations, but South Africans would have expected Ramaphosa’s reaction to be different.
