In the opinion pages today, we’re covering the reaction to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address to the nation earlier in the week where he announced the first real energy action plan for the country in decades.

EDITORIAL | Forgive our scepticism, Cyril, but when we see it, we’ll believe it – TimesLIVE Premium (for subscribers)

TimesLIVE writes that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Monday night address, where he outlined the government’s energy action plan for dealing with the crisis at Eskom, was met with “encouraged”, “hopeful” and “cautiously optimistic” responses.

The publication writes that South Africans have become immune to hearing the government’s excuses as to why Eskom has failed and the various action plans that have been unveiled over the course of 15 years of load shedding. Read more here.

Ramaphosa is no hero for his ‘fix Eskom’ power plan – The Citizen (for subscribers)

Similarly, The Citizen writes that Ramaphosa is not deserving of much praise for finally unveiling some sort of plan for Eskom given that many of the measures proposed in his plan should have been implemented years ago.

The publication calls the affection shown towards Ramaphosa, Stockholm syndrome, and writes that after years of load shedding all we really want is to have a stable and reliable round-the-clock electricity supply like any other country. Read more here.

EDITORIAL: Nice plan, now how about implementing it? – Financial Mail

And finally, Financial Mail writes that while Ramaphosa’s plan is actually a good one, many critics fear that it will end up on the trash heap like many of the government’s other proposals over the years. Read more here.
