Political commentator Justice Malala writes that over the weekend much was put down on paper from the ANC’s policy conference but it will all be for nothing as the party failed to address the fundamental issues facing South Africa.
Malala argues that the party will not be able to achieve many of the so-called proposals and plans put forward when branches like KwaZulu-Natal are actively campaigning to end the ‘step aside’ rule, which states that those accused of corruption and criminal activities should relinquish their position until they are cleared. Ralph Mathekga argues that the policy conference became a proxy to vote on ideas from rival factions within the ANC and had little to do with the contestation of ideas or good governance.
Mathekaga also takes aim at the ridiculous fight coming from those aligned to former president Jacob Zuma who want the ‘step aside’ rule changed or repealed.
Mathekga writes, “Instead of accelerating measures to fight against corruption in the country and undertaking new commitments to support the prosecution authority in following up on cases, ANC delegates are asking what former president Jacob Zuma did to have been imprisoned last year?” Read more here.
