Opinions of the Day: The ANC should focus on the big four rather than the Reserve Bank

In the opinion pages today, Caiphus Kgosana argues that the ANC should be less focused on the SA Reserve Bank and turn its attention to SA’s big four banks. Justice Malala writes that it takes far too long for justice to be served and agrees with the Taliban faction of the ANC – the ‘step aside’ rule should be scrapped.

Caiphus Kgosana writes the ANC delegates once again brought up the issue of nationalising the SA Reserve Bank at the recent ANC policy conference. It’s a resolution that was first agreed upon nearly five years ago but is yet to be implemented.

Kgosana writes that ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe told his comrades that they should forget about buying out the private shareholders of the bank because it would be too costly.

But Kgosana writes the ANC is taking aim at the wrong bank and should be looking at the transformation efforts of the big four banking institutions in South Africa as only one, Standard Bank, currently has a black group chief executive. Read more here.

JUSTICE MALALA: Step up, not aside – Financial Mail (for subscribers)

Justice Malala writes the Taliban faction of the ANC, who recently won control of the KwaZulu-Natal branch, are both right and wrong when they call for the party’s ‘step aside’ rule to be scrapped.

Malala writes the real issue in South Africa is that the wheels of justice turn too slowly and that when someone is accused or charged with a crime it can take years for their case to finally end up in court, if at all.

The political commentator asks that we imagine a scenario where someone is, indeed, innocent. They will have had to step down from their position and possibly forfeit a salary their family depends on while waiting for their case to come to court. Read more here.
