Opinions Today: Zuma vs Maughan: Media freedom goes on trial

Adrian Basson writes in his most recent editorial that the private prosecution against Karyn Maughan and News24 is a full-scale attack on media freedom by the country’s former president in an effort to “divert attention from his own troubles”.

Basson argues that the true objective of this prosecution is to intimidate and prevent Maughan from conducting her work, which includes reporting on Zuma’s own corruption case for almost two decades.

It’s has been nearly four years since Eskom first sought the government for assistance in reducing its unmanageable debt, and the government has yet to fulfil that promise, BusinessLIVE reports.

The problem of Eskom’s mounting debt has once again emerged. According to Enoch Godongwana, the Minister of Finance, the government intends to assume some of Eskom’s debt. Godongwana plans to detail the guidelines in his midterm spending plan later this month. Both the quantity and the method of implementation will be under careful scrutiny by the market.

What the law says about ‘quiet quitting’ in South Africa

Quiet quitting is a trend that has sparked several discussions during the last week.

It occurs when an employee does the bare minimum of their job without necessarily breaking their employment contract. Asma Cachalia, a senior associate and employment law specialist at Clifford Dekker Hofmeyr, writes for Business Tech that there is no basis for accusing an employee of resigning quietly as long as the individual works in accordance with the employment contract.
