(Bloomberg) — Gambia has foiled an attempt to overthrow President Adama Barrow, according to the government.
Four soldiers were arrested in connection with the plot and an investigation is ongoing, the government said in a statement Wednesday.
Barrow, who’s been president since 2017, was reelected last year with 53% of the vote. His predecessor, Yahya Jammeh, ruled the country for 22 years. Before Jammeh, Gambia’s first president, Dawda Jawara, ran the coastal nation for 24 years.
Barrow’s administration has carried out military reforms, leading to the dismissal of soldiers. He’s also sought to revive tourism in the $2 billion West African economy, which depends on the sector for nearly a third of its gross domestic product.
