Vietnam says it is ready to engage with US on tariffs

HANOI (Reuters) – Vietnam is ready to engage with the United States to discuss the new tariffs on steel imposed by Washington and to avoid risks of additional duties, a spokesperson for its foreign ministry said on Thursday.

The Southeast Asian industrial hub was hit earlier this week by Washington’s new 25% tariffs on steel, of which it is one of the main exporters to the United States.

It could also be affected by reciprocal duties threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Vietnam stands ready to discuss with the U.S. in a constructive manner,” the spokesperson told a regular press conference when asked about risks of new tariffs for Vietnam.

The spokesperson added Vietnam was also available to discuss the new tariffs on steel to find solutions in the interest of both parties.
