The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria was told today by the State Attorney’s office that former president Jacob Zuma’s legal costs totalled in excess of R18.2 million when he used the state’s money to fight the arms deal corruption case against him, reports News24.
The State Attorney’s office said it would issue a summons if Zuma fails to pay back the money he owes. Deputy State Attorney Isaac Chowe said in an affidavit filed on 14 July that action would be taken to recoup the money now that the amount owed had been determined.
In May, the Supreme Court of Appeal ordered the State Attorney to “compile a full and complete accounting” of what had been paid for Zuma’s defence thus far after it dismissed the appeal from the former president to overturn a ruling by the High Court in December 2018, which cut Zuma’s funding.
