In local government election news, it seems increasingly likely that the election date set for October 27 will be postponed but there is some consternation around who or what body must make the decision.

The Financial Mail writes in the editorial today that while the Electoral Commission asked former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke to “lead a process to evaluate the impact of Covid on conditions conducive for the holding of free and fair elections,” and he recommended a postponement due to the uncertainty of COVID-19 infection rates.

But as the FM argues the one thing, we know is certain is the uncertainty of the next wave of infections and there are no guarantees that come February 2022 (the proposed postponement date) that we won’t have to postpone the elections again if infections are on the rise.

It’s a slippery slope, to say the least.

While in the Daily Maverick, Jordan Griffiths asks which democratic institution should deliberate and decide on the postponement, the Constitutional Court or Parliament? It’s an interesting take and a question worth deeper analysis and understanding.
