Opinions of the Day: A competent SOE chief executive steps down

Come next June, Telkom will have a new CEO with its current head honcho Sipho Maseko due to leave the post in 11 months. Maseko announced his resignation from the company last week after turning it around from an ailing state-owned enterprise (the state owns 40.5%) with just three months of cash left in the bank when he arrived on April 1, 2013. Since then, Maskeo has led the company valiantly and the share price has increased from R15 in those early days to just over R42 today, representing an increase of 186%. Financial Mail editor Rob Rose conducts an insightful interview with the outgoing chief executive. (For subscribers)

In the Daily Maverick, Oscar van Heerden writes about the failures of the South African intelligence community going as far back as 2007 when President Mbeki greatly overestimated his chances of retaining the ANC presidency over Jacob Zuma. Van Heerden also looks at how the United States and the United Kingdom run their intelligence agencies and coordinate with the commander-in-chief as well as how the apartheid state could rely on its intelligence apparatus.

The Sunday Times Daily writes in its editorial today about the recent Transnet cyberattack that hit the port authority and brought South Africa’s ports to a standstill. The news publication highlights the ongoing threat that cyberattacks pose and the need to be very wary of cracks in the IT armour. The latest cyberattack on SA comes after it was recently announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa was targeted in a recent spy scandal.
