New names are thrown into the hat as reshuffle beckons

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to shuffle his cabinet imminently with the minister in the presidency and minister of health portfolios currently occupied by acting heads following the death of Jackson Mthembu six months ago and the special leave taken by Zweli Mkhize following the Digital Vibes scandal, reports Business Day.

Ramaphosa has been in consultation with the ANC top brass over the appointment of new cabinet ministers but is yet to include alliance partners the SA Communist Party and trade union Cosatu in any discussions.

Some of the names being bandied about include deputy health minister Joe Phaahla and Limpopo health MEC Phophi Ramathuba to take over as minister of health and former deputy finance minister Mondli Gungubele as minister in the presidency.

Government insiders are pushing for Phaahla to take over the health portfolio, but Ramathuba is said to be a favourite of the presidents’ following a better-than-expected COVID-19 vaccination rollout plan in Limpopo.
